Former Liverpool boss “in pole position” to become Newcastle United’s new manager in £24 million move

Former Liverpool boss “in pole position” to become Newcastle United’s new manager in £24 million move

Newcastle takeover puts Steve Bruce in trouble

Last week, many Newcastle fans’ dreams were made a reality when Mike Ashley’s 14-year reign in charge of the Tyneside club came to an end, and the Saudi Public Investment Fund took the reins, backed by a hefty budget.

Now boasting the richest owners in world football, but sitting in the Premier League relegation zone without a win, the Magpies are sure to spend money in January in order to avoid a somewhat humiliating relegation to England’s second tier.

In addition, they seem set to part ways with current boss Steve Bruce, expected to be sacked in the not too distant future.

Brendan Rodgers “in pole position” to take over from Steve Bruce

As per reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the latest man tipped to take over from Steve Bruce is none other than Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irishman guided the Foxes to an FA Cup triumph last season, as well as a second consecutive season in the Europa League, but has enjoyed a less than ideal start to 2021-22.

After seven games, the midlands outfit find themselves in 13th place, having won 2, drawn 2 and lost 3, while looking all at sea defensively.

As a consequence, it seems as though Rodgers is set to swap the midlands for Tyneside in the coming weeks, as the new Magpies owners seek out a man to lead their new project.

Such a move will not come cheap, however, with Rodgers having a release clause of 16 million pounds in his contract with Leicester City. In addition, Newcastle would have to pay off the remainder of Steve Bruce’s contract, which stands at 8 million pounds.

This would see the manager swap cost 24 million pounds upfront, potentially ranking third in Newcastle’s record transfers (Behind Joelinton and Joe Willock), and is a clear indication of the aims of the new owners moving forward.
