Former Barcelona defender slams ‘apathetic’ Real Madrid for showing vs Girona

Girona star Marc Muniesa has today taken aim at Real Madrid’s stars, following their performance versus his side yesterday afternoon.

Domestic clash

The two sides went head to head in a La Liga matchup at the Estadi Montilivi, with Real in desperate need of a win to keep up pace with Barcelona, having already fallen 8 points behind the Blaugrana in the Spanish top-flight (albeit with a game less played).

Everything looked to be going according to plan for the Spanish champions when Isco put them 1-0 up after 12 minutes, but the stubborn home side held out for the remainder of the opening half to give themselves a fighting chance heading into the second 45.

And their cause was aided hugely by an injury blow for the visitors at half-time, with Raphael Varane having not been fit to return for the second-half.

It remains to be seen whether the French stopper will be available for his side’s Champions League clash with Tottenham during the week.

Shock result

And, as if to add insult to injury, Girona went on to notch a pair of goals within the first 15 minutes of the second-half, as former Middlesbrough striker Cristhian Stuani’s opener was added to by Portu just before the hour mark.

Real struggled to create clear-cut chances from here on-in, as the Catalan-based minnows held on for a famous 3 points in the first ever meeting between the sides.

Apathetic showing

In the aftermath of the clash, fans and pundits alike turned on Zinedine Zidane’s men for their lax attitude, suggesting that Los Blancos’ superstars didn’t show the respect to their opponents that they deserved.

Former Barcelona stopper Marc Muniesa, who played the full 90 minutes for Girona yesterday, has since suggested as much, having had the following to say during an interview with Catalunya Radio:

‘Real Madrid surprised me because they came here very confident and relaxed. They were apathetic, thinking they’d win easily.’
