Former Arsenal striker sends warning to Gabriel Martinelli

Former Arsenal striker sends warning to Gabriel Martinelli

Martinelli struggling for minutes

Gabriel Martinelli joined Arsenal in July of 2019. The Gunners are understood to have paid just over £6m for the Brazilian.

Martinelli was one of Arsenal’s bright sparks during his debut 2019/20 season.

The 20-year-old scored 10 and assisted four across 26 outings for the Gunners, including this stunning individual effort vs Chelsea in the Premier League:

However, the Brazilian’s campaign was brought to a premature end when he suffered a knee injury, which also saw him miss the start of 2020/21.

Martinelli would eventually return to action midway through last season, but is yet to rediscover the form he found during the early day’s of his Arsenal career.

It is the 2021/22 campaign, though, which looks to be Martinelli’s biggest concern as Arsenal now have no European football to hand their fringe stars for minutes in.

Ex-Arsenal star sends warning to Martinelli

Martinelli did start Arsenal’s top league games of the season. But now Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have returned, the South American has not made it off the bench in the north Londoners’ subsequent five league games.

Now, with Martinelli seemingly only set for very limited minutes this term, the young forward has been sent a warning by a former Arsenal striker.

Speaking to Football Insider recently, Kevin Campbell warned Martinelli has to take his chances whenever they come:

“Martinelli is only 20. He is still learning his trade. Arsenal cannot do wrong by signing a top, young international striker like Watkins or Calvert-Lewin.

“Lacazette will not be there next season. Martinelli will get his opportunities. The key is taking them.

“Nobody has time anymore. You will not get picked just because you are a young player who needs experience. You need to be doing the business to get on. Martinelli has to take his chance when it comes. That has been the case in football ever since I was a kid.

“There isn’t as many games this season with no European football so when the chance comes it is massively important that you make the most of it.”
