A former Arsenal star is in line for a surprise return to the Emirates in the near future.
The Gunners are looking to appoint their first-ever director of football to kickstart a shake-up at the underperforming Premier League side. The man they’ve identified as their prime target is Marc Overmars.
Once a flying winger at Highbury, Overmars was nicknamed the roadrunner because of his blistering pace. He was a part of their double-winning side in 1998 before switching to Barcelona in a big-money move.
Since hanging up his boots in 2009 Overmars has been working in his native Holland, mostly with Ajax.
He’s been the director of football of the Eredivisie club since 2012.
The Daily Mail are among many news outlets running the story about Overmars being of interest to the Arsenal board. The director of football role involves overseeing transfers and creating an ethos for a club.
