Marcos Alonso, younger brother of Xabi, has signed a 5-year deal with Chelsea. The Londoners paid around £23 million for the Fiorentina left-back, who has previously played at Sunderland and Bolton.
Antonio Conte has been in the market for defensive reinforcements for some time and Alonso provides his new boss with versatility and Premier League experience.
Although predominantly a left-back, Alonso is capable of playing in midfield. It’s likely that he will be be cover for Cesar Azpilicueta.
The 25-year-old scored 5 times in 35 league appearances during his 3-year stay with Bolton Wanderers. He also made 16 league appearances during a loan spell at Sunderland in the 2013/14 season.
Busy day at Chelsea
Alonso isn’t the only defensive signing Chelsea will make on Deadline Day. Former player David Luiz is set to complete his return to the club after a £31 million fee was agreed between Chelsea and PSG.
Luiz could provide competition to the ageing John Terry, or may even be deployed as a defensive midfielder.
