Filipe Luis hits out at FIFA over Lionel Messi’s ‘The Best’ snub

Does Messi deserve to be in the top three?

Atletico Madrid star Filipe Luis has hit out at FIFA over the exclusion of Lionel Messi in the final three of their ‘The Best’ award.

The award is for the best male player of the year and those who win are tipped as potential favourites to win the Ballon d’Or.

Though, there have been some interesting exclusions from this year’s edition of ‘The Best’ award.

Most notably is Lionel Messi who missed out on the final three.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah were the players who made the final three over him.

That has lead to much discussion over whether Messi did enough to at least be in the top three.

‘When he’s not there, the award loses its credibility

Now, Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has hit out at FIFA over their exclusion of Messi.

He claims despite the player not winning the Champions League or impressing in the world cup, he is still the best player in football right now.

‘The award is for the best player in the world – and that today for me is Messi,’ he explained in an interview with Globoesporte.

‘As in the past years. When he’s not there, the award loses its credibility.

‘It doesn’t matter if somebody wins the World Cup or the Champions League, he is the best.’

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid react to Messi & Griezmann’s ‘The Best’ snubs

While Messi will no doubt be aggrieved with the decision to exclude him, he isn’t the only one who was snubbed.

Another player who was tipped for a potential top three spot was Antoine Griezmann.

Having won the World Cup, Europa League and UEFA Super Cup, Griezmann certainly impressed last year.

Safe to say, his club Atletico Madrid were also not happy with his exclusion and reacted on social media.

Barcelona also reacted to Messi’s exclusion on their social pages.
