Fight between Edinson Cavani and Neymar is about money as well as egos

Cavani vs Neymar

The plot continues to thicken at Paris Saint-Germain. Soon it may be rock solid with all this thickening. The players at the centre of the thickening plot are Edinson Cavani and Neymar, the club’s strike partners.

A feud between the players became public when they squabbled over set-pieces during the 2-0 win over Lyon on Sunday. Cavani is PSG’s designated penalty-taker but Neymar wanted to take an awarded spot-kick and was seen debating with Cavani before the Uruguayan crashed his effort off the underside of the crossbar.

In the same match, Dani Alves showed whose side he’s on when he shielded the ball from Cavani before a free-kick. He then passed the ball to Neymar in a sly enough way to get the internet to collectively tut.

Further reports emerged last night that the argument didn’t end on the pitch. Cavani confronted Neymar in the dressing room and things would have gotten physical if it wasn’t for the intervention of Thiago Silva.

Now another story has given viewers of the fight something else to consider.

Money bonuses

According to Goal’s Ligue 1 correspondent, Edinson Cavani wins a €1 million bonus if he finishes the season as the club’s top scorer. It’s unknown if Neymar has something similar but one would imagine it’s a possibility.

One reason this won’t sit well with people is that it seems like the kind of clause that would lead to arguments within a squad. Would PSG really include a top scorer clause? Wouldn’t it make more sense to have goal targets?

For example, Cavani could earn €1m if he scores 40 goals in all competitions. That seems more likely. Neymar’s biggest motivation for becoming the top scorer at PSG would be to show that he’s stepped out of Lionel Messi’s shadow. Finishing behind Cavani or anyone else in the scoring charts for PSG would imply that Neymar is still second fiddle.
