FIFA announce that World Cup qualifier set to be replayed due to match fixing referee

Match fixing

FIFA have confirmed that South Africa’s World Cup qualifier against Senegal will be replayed.

The decision comes after the referee of the match was found guilty of match manipulation.

Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey has been banned for life by world football’s governing body.

On Tuesday night, South Africa lost 2-1 at home to Cape Verde, just a few days after losing to the same team by the same scoreline.

Had South Africa won, qualification to the next round would have been in their own hands as Burkina Faso and Senegal drew 2-2.

Things have gone from bad to worse for South Africa, as their 2-1 win over Senegal last year – the match that will be replayed – was the only time Bafana Bafana have won in their Group D

While South Africa can only lose from this announcement, Senegal stand to gain a lot.

A win for Senegal in the replayed fixture would see them move from third to first in Group D.

It’s not clear yet how and when the match will be replayed.
