Fantasy football managers fume over decision to award Man Utd’s Bruno Fernandes assist against Fulham

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 07: Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United celebrates after scoring his team's first goal during the Premier League match between Everton and Manchester United at Goodison Park on November 07, 2020 in Liverpool, England. Bruno assist?

The world of Fantasy Football can of course bring people together, but can also divide based on the smallest decisions from a yellow card costing a solitary point, or a player being awarded an assist which some believe was not justified.

The latter example, meanwhile, saw Bruno Fernandes take centre stage against Fulham. The Portuguese attacking midfielder was deemed to have legitimately and intentionally set the ball up for Edinson Cavani to equalise, after an Ademola Lookman goal opened the scoring.

Fernandes was played in down the left-hand side, before swinging in a cross which French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola could not hang on to. The latter parried it straight into the path of Cavani, who slotted home calmly.

The official Fantasy Football site, at the time, stated that the goal’s assist had yet to be confirmed, after the significant touch from Areola.

Fantasy fans fume

At half-time, though, it was confirmed that Fernandes had in fact been granted the assist, with the tweet in question having been met with quite a response from those who had evidently not included the Portuguese in their teams:

Such aggravation stemmed from a recent decision not to award Ben Chilwell, the Chelsea left-back, an assist in the Blues’ 1-0 victory over Fulham. Again, Areola was at the heart of things, palming out a cross from the England international, which fell to Mason Mount to smash into the back of the net:

With Bruno Fernandes of course one of the biggest goal contributors in the Premier League, is it arguable that the mistake falls at the feet of the Fantasy managers who opted against selecting the Manchester United star? An influx of transfers for the next Gameweek may now be on many a manager’s agenda.
