Viewers of the clash between Juventus and Atletico Madrid have flooded to Twitter to question VAR, after the Bianconeri had an early strike chalked off for a questionable foul on Jan Oblak.
The two sides are currently locked in action in Turin, in the second-leg of the high-profile Champions League last-16 tie between the European heavyweights.
Visitors Atleti headed into the matchup as overwhelming favourites to advance to the competition’s quarter-finals, having secured a deserved 2-0 victory in the tie’s first-leg in Madrid on the 20th of February.
Late goals from Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin proved the difference between the sides, as Juventus’ quest to secure their first Champions League title in over 20 years took a major blow.
Juventus’ hopes of mounting a historic comeback, though, looked to have gotten off to the ideal start tonight, when Giorgio Chiellini slammed home into the Atleti net inside the game’s opening 5 minutes.
A corner from the left saw the ball drop just in front of the visitors’ goal, before a challenge between Jan Oblak and Cristiano Ronaldo eventually allowed Chiellini to strike.
Referee Bjorn Kuipers, though, immediately blew his whistle, penalizing Ronaldo for a foul on Oblak.
The official’s decision, which was a highly-contentious one, was subsequently sent to VAR, though only a clear and obvious mistake in Kuipers’ judgement would have permitted the ruling to be overturned.
Many viewers, however, were of the opinion that the decision was in fact completely wrong, with Ronaldo having connected with the ball before touching Oblak:
That was a goal. Just like Man Utd’s pen wasn’t a pen. And Roma’s non-pen was a pen. Fucking love VAR.

HOW IS THAT A FOUL ON THE GK, VAR IS HONESTLY SO POINTLESS. THEY LITERALLY PICK AND CHOOSE WHEN THEY WANT A GOAL.
