Fans speculate over what Danny Rose said to Jamie Vardy before penalty miss vs Spurs

Jamie Vardy

Viewers of the clash between Tottenham and Leicester City have taken to social media in numbers this afternoon to highlight an incident between Danny Rose and Jamie Vardy, moments before the latter saw a penalty saved by Hugo Lloris.

The two sides went head to head at Wembley, in the first of the day’s two Premier League fixtures.

Hosts Spurs headed into proceedings hoping to keep pace with the English top-flight’s top-2, in the knowledge that a victory in London would see them close the gap on 2nd-placed City to just 2 points, and on table-toppers Liverpool to 5 points.

Before today, Mauricio Pochettino’s men had picked up 3 straight wins in the league.

Leicester, on the other hand, were winless in 5 across all competitions heading into this afternoon’s matchup, with the Foxes having sat in a lowly 12th-place in the Premier League table as a result.

Eriksen and Son on target

Nevertheless, Claude Puel’s men went on to give a solid account of themselves at Wembley, but, when all was said and done, the class of Spurs proved too much.

The deadlock was broken with just over half an hour on the clock, when Davinson Sanchez smashed home a bullet header from Christian Eriksen’s pinpoint delivery.

Eriksen then turned goalscorer in the 63rd-minute, rifling home a dipping effort from just outside the box.

Jamie Vardy went on to set up a nervy final quarter of an hour after getting on the end of Ricardo Pereira’s squared-ball in the 76th-minute, but Heung-min Son sealed a hard-fought 3 points for hosts Spurs in the game’s closing moments, after breaking free of Leicester’s back-4.

Lloris thwarts Vardy

Amidst a frenetic final half-hour at Wembley, though, Leicester actually had the opportunity to level things up just moments before Eriksen added Tottenham’s 2nd of the day.

The Foxes were awarded a penalty after Jan Vertonghen was adjudged to have taken out James Maddison in the Spurs box, with Claude Puel having opted to introduce Jamie Vardy from the bench to take the subsequent spot-kick with his first-touch.

However, Vardy saw his low effort well saved by Hugo Lloris.

Rose’s influence

It was not the Foxes’ hitman’s effort itself which had many fans talking across social media, though, but rather the actions of Danny Rose in the buildup to Vardy’s strike.

The stopper (and Kieran Trippier to a lesser extent) could clearly be seen mouthing something into the ear of his international teammate, an act which was quickly spotted by viewers:

Many then questioned exactly what Rose may have said to Vardy, with some more creative fans having even provided their own interpretations of the events:
