Fans can’t quite believe the standard of defending between Sevilla and Liverpool

Viewers of the clash between Sevilla and Liverpool have taken to social media in their droves this evening to slate the standard of defending on show between the sides.

Jurgen Klopp’s men travelled to Spain with the hopes of securing their place in the last 16 of the competition, sitting a point clear of their hosts in the Group E table.

Spartak Moscow surprisingly only managed a draw at home to Maribor earlier this evening, meaning a win for either Sevilla or Liverpool would put in them in the driving seat in the group.

Chances galore

The Premier League outfit couldn’t have asked for a better start, after Roberto Firmino got on the end of Gigi Wijnaldum’s flick from a corner to slot home in just the 2nd-minute.

The visitors looked to be in control, before twice being ripped wide open by a pair of Sevilla attacks.

The first saw Nolito turn Joe Gomez inside out on the edge of the box, before his side-footed effort was brilliantly palmed onto the base of the post by Loris Karius.

Incredibly, just a minute later, the away side were once again opened up with ease, but Wissam Ben Yedder slid his one-on-one opportunity agonisingly past the far post.

The home side were made to pay before long, as Liverpool created a near carbon copy of their opener in the 22nd minute.

A corner was once again whipped in from the right, with Firmino this time turning provider, as his flicked header was slotted home by Sadio Mane at the back post.

And the Reds weren’t done there, as a counter attack on the half-hour mark saw Mane sent clear, with his effort across goal palmed directly into the path of Firmino for his second of the night.

Viewers couldn’t quite believe just how bad the defending on show from both sides (particularly Sevilla) was throughout the opening 45 minutes, with some of the best Twitter reaction below:
