The FIFPro Team of the Year has been announced and unsurprisingly, there’s been a bit of debate surrounding it.
It’s the inclusion of one player in particular that fans can’t wrap their heads around: Andres Iniesta.
There’s no doubt that the Spaniard is a legend but it could be argued that there are a great number of midfielders who had a better year than him. One could even say that Iniesta is very much past his prime.
While a past-his-prime Iniesta is better than most of the world’s midfielders, is he better than N’Golo Kante? Or Casemiro? Real Madrid players dominated the line-up but there wasn’t a place for the Brazilian star.
Iniesta got into the FIFA pro 11 but Ngolo Kante didn’t. Some people think racism doesn’t exist

It seems as though players go on autopilot when they vote on things like this. Or perhaps politics takes over.
Iniesta is a popular player who is respected by most of the world’s top players. He’s also a safe vote. One that won’t be questioned. Would it have really shaken football to its core to nominate the incredible Isco?
Kevin De Bruyne also deserves a shout. Dele Alli might feel aggrieved too along with Eden Hazard.
Iniesta proving that the world XI is a popularity contest once again.

Iniesta coul be injured for the whole year, but would still make the world XI. Mans still reaping the rewards of 2010 world cup

Dani Alves was superb last year, but Carvajal should’ve made it and Casemiro should certainly be included instead of Iniesta. pic.twitter.com/iK3bzDSBMT

Kante should be in TOTY instead of Iniesta IMO. Won PL twice in a row with different teams. Also Kane, De Gea & De Bruyne for next year!

How Iniesta makes into this team is shocking.

No one can deny that Iniesta in his prime was unreal but this guy can retire from football & still make the world XI lool

Iniesta sacrificed his unborn child to be given awards he’s unworthy of shame

Iniesta shouldn’t have been in World XI.I’ll be first to admit that. But baffles me how people still pay this much attention to these awards

When Iniesta retires, he will still be in the World XI.
