Fans call for Liverpool midfielder to make England return

Viewers of this afternoon’s Merseyside derby clash between Everton and Liverpool have taken to social media in numbers to reveal their hopes that James Milner comes out of international retirement to make a return to the England setup.

The Merseyside rivals are locked in action at Goodison Park in today’s early kick-off, with hosts Everton having come into proceedings in 9th-place in the Premier League table.

The Toffees fell to a disappointing 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Manchester City in their last outing, having picked up consecutive victories over Brighton and Stoke City in their two previous fixtures.

Liverpool, meanwhile, shocked the masses with a stunning 3-0 win over Premier League champions-elect Manchester City in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday night, courtesy of a blitzing opening half-hour at Anfield.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane did the damage on the night, with the Reds set to travel to the Etihad next week as clear favourites to advance to the semi-finals of Europe’s top-tier competition.

The first-half at Goodison Park this afternoon saw clear-cut chances few and far between, with the best opportunity having fallen to Liverpool youngster Dominic Solanke 6 yards out, only for the striker to be denied by a reaction stop from Jordan Pickford.

Pickford also made an excellent stop from a James Milner cross-shot, while Loris Karius pulled off the save off the half from a whipped Yannick Bolasie strike from the edge of the box.

Three Lions return?

Amongst today’s scrappy opening 45 minutes, one player managed to stand out from the crowd, in the form of Liverpool midfielder James Milner.

Milner, who was also superb during the Reds’ victory over Manchester City during the week, looked calm and composed in possession, strong in the tackle, and dangerous in attacking areas, with many English fans having since taken to Twitter to plead with the 32-year-old to come out of international retirement to line out for the Three Lions at this summer’s World Cup:
