Fabian Delph speaks about ‘heartbreak’ after England World Cup exit

Superheros

Fabian Delph has noted that England players really did think they were going to win the World Cup, and that they are so, so upset to have failed with that objective.

However, he did note that the nation seems more united than it has in a long time – and that the squad are focusing on being role models for young players and making sure diversity plays a huge part in the future of the country.

The Express report he said: “I did think that we would go back as superheroes, because I genuinely thought we were going to win the World Cup.

“I would hope we are going back to a better country – the nation seems to have been brought together.

“From what I’ve heard it seems to be a better place. If we continue to do what we are doing and to unite people then I’m sure we will be living in a better England.

“We need to continue to be good role models and try to help the young guys to look up to us and try to do what we have done.

“It feels that we are uniting the nation. The diversity in the team has definitely brought people together. It is great for the country and great for us as players to be part of that as well and almost force that to happen.”

Belgium

One thing England can of course bring home is the bronze medal should they beat Belgium in the third place play-off.

That seems something the players are actually keen to do, and while many people see it as somewhat of a pointless game, that’s not the impression the England players have given.

They want to come home with their heads held high – and also of course have the small matter of Harry Kane and his Golden Boot to deal with as well.
