‘They go for a walk and want to go back to bed’ – Explanation for continued absences of Newcastle pair Saint-Maximin & Lascelles

An insight into the reasoning behind the recent absences of Newcastle United stars Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamaal Lascelles has been forthcoming online this evening.

Magpies hit hard

The subject of Covid-19 has of course taken centre stage at St. James’ Park over recent weeks.

This comes with a major outbreak at Newcastle having seen a host of players and staff alike forced away from the club’s ground, and into self isolation.

The extent of the outbreak even saw the Magpies’ scheduled Premier League meeting with Aston Villa postponed earlier this month:

The majority of Steve Bruce’s squad, thankfully have since managed full recoveries.

And Newcastle, to their credit, have gone on to secure a win and a draw from their last 3 outings.

As revealed by the club’s boss on the back of their stalemate with Fulham over the weekend, however, there remain two Magpies stars who have not yet managed to shake the effects of the virus.

Providing an insight into the struggles of the – at the time – unnamed pair, Bruce explained:

‘My thoughts are with the two players, and the welfare of them. It’s frightening when you think they are young and fit and absolutely supreme athletes. If anybody needs reminding of how serious this is, then we have witnessed it.’

‘We’ve had vomiting, sores, mouth ulcers, no smell, no taste, but the big thing, and which is the worrying, is the welfare of one or two of them. It’s not great at all.’

‘That long-term Covid is something which you wouldn’t think possible in young, fit, athletes. Unfortunately, it is so.’

‘They go for a walk for half an hour and then they want to go back to bed. It’s as brutal as that. The fatigue is the one thing that has hit them all. For two of them, it’s beyond that. We hope there’s light at the end of the tunnel, but some are finding it a struggle.’

ASM & Lascelles named

And, as outlined above, the identities of the players in question have, on Monday, been revealed.

They come in the form of two of the key members of the Geordie outfit’s squad – Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamaal Lascelles.

The pair, who have provided Newcastle with permission to reveal their identities to the press, have been described as suffering from ‘long-term Covid’:

As things stand, it remains unclear when either explosive wide-man Saint-Maximin or Magpies captain Lascelles could return to the pitch.
