Explanation emerges for Everton boss Benitez’s costly decision to haul off Allan for Holgate vs Spurs

Everton boss Rafael Benitez has, on Sunday evening, provided an explanation for his decision to haul off Allan prematurely versus Tottenham Hotspur.

Spoils shared

Benitez of course led his side back into action earlier today.

On the back of a dismal spell of form, culminating in a trio of successive Premier League defeats, the Toffees welcomed the aforementioned Spurs to Goodison Park, for Antonio Conte’s first domestic outing in the Lilywhites diugout.

And, though it proved far from a classic, when all was said and done on Merseyside, Everton managed to stop the rot.

A hard-fought 90 minutes, during which both sides could have snatched all three points, ultimately played out into a 0-0 stalemate.

‘Had to come off’

As alluded to above, though, one moment of contention, amongst the Everton faithful at least, was forthcoming on Sunday, in the form of Rafael Benitez’s decision to haul off Allan.

Late in proceedings, the Spaniard sprung a surprise, when he opted to replace his Brazilian midfield standout with defender Mason Holgate, who himself slotted into the middle of the park.

And the call, in the end, proved costly, as Holgate was sent for an early bath owing to a dangerous challenge on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

In turn, speaking during his post-match interview this evening, Benitez was inevitably drawn on his call to remove Allan from proceedings prematurely.

The Spaniard, though, went on to reveal that he was in fact left with little choice, after the former Napoli man came down with a bout of flu.

An update on the wellbeing of sidelined defender Yerry Mina, meanwhile, was also provided.
