Explained: Pontus Jansson banned by the FA, Charlie Austin escapes

Following Leeds United’s 1-1 draw with Brentford last month, Pontus Jansson was banned for one-match following his criticism of the referee.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Swedish defender accused the official of a “robbery”.

Meanwhile, Southampton’s Charlie Austin was also heavily critical of a referee last Saturday but managed to avoid charges.

Whilst the FA deemed Austin’s comments ‘reasonable’, Jansson was hit with a ban and a £5k fine.

The Football Association were unhappy with the Swede swearing whilst also appearing to undermine Jeremy Simpson.

Despite netting an 88th-minute equaliser for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, the 27-year-old described his mood as “shit”.

The referee awarded Brentford a controversial penalty before failing to send off Moses Odubajo which infuriated the Elland Road support.
