Ex-Liverpool defender sends warning over Virgil van Dijk ahead of new campaign

Ex-Liverpool defender sends warning over Virgil van Dijk ahead of new campaign

Van Dijk sidelined

Since his arrival at Anfield, Virgil van Dijk has been one of Liverpool’s most valuable assets.

The centre-back, along with Alisson, helped transform a dysfunctional backline into one of the best in Europe, winning the Premier League and Champions League along the way.

However, the Reds would lose their star stopper for much of the 2020/21 campaign when he clashed with Jordan Pickford in October.

The Dutchman required knee surgery and was ruled out for the remainder of the domestic season and Euro 2020.

However, we have now seen the centre-back take to the pitch for the first time since his injury.

Liverpool took on Hertha Berlin in a pre-season friendly clash on Thursday evening and VVD played 20 minutes.

Carragher on Van Dijk returning

So, Liverpool fans will no doubt be hopeful of seeing Van Dijk return to action on the opening weekend vs Norwich. And, in turn, see Liverpool’s backline become the solid force it was back in 2019/20 when they won their first Premier League title.

However, as Van Dijk edges his way back to full fitness, Jamie Carragher has sent a warning over VVD.

The ex-Liverpool defender stated that Liverpool need to be careful with the centre-back and that we should not expect Liverpool to automatically win the league in 2021/22 just because Van Dijk is back:

‘I think we have to be careful and I think Jurgen Klopp will be.

‘I don’t think we should expect that Virgil van Dijk comes back into Liverpool and Liverpool are going to automatically win the league again this season.

‘He’s had a really serious injury and he’s got to make sure he is not rushed back. If he’s back to his best he is the best central defender in world football and that’s what Liverpool will want over the next five or six years, not the next five or six weeks.

‘If he doesn’t make the first game of the season it’s not the end of the world, it is about making sure Virgil van Dijk is 100 per cent right so he’s in a position where he can have the next five or six years at Liverpool at a top level.

‘It may be a gentle start with Virgil until we see him when he is 100 per cent right, but if that could be on that first game of the season and he can play the next few games I think everyone would be delighted.’
