Ex-Liverpool boss explains how Reds can come back vs Real Madrid

Liverpool dominated

Liverpool of course faced off with Real Madrid in the first of two Champions League quarter-final legs earlier this week.

The Reds, despite a poor season overall, headed into the tie in decent form both domestically and in Europe, having comfortably dispatched of RB Leipzig in the competition’s previous round.

However, when the two sides faced off in Spain, Los Blancos absolutely dominated Jurgen Klopp and co.

A brace from a very impressive Vinicius Junior, either side of a Marco Asensio strike, handed Zinedine Zidane’s men a comfortable lead heading into the reverse leg next Wednesday.

Benitez’s advice to Liverpool

Mohamed Salah, though, did bag an away goal for Liverpool, handing the English outfit some hope of a comeback.

Given Madrid’s recent form, however, it is tough to envision the Premier League champions progressing to the last-four.

But, nevertheless, ex-Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has this weekend offered some advice to the Merseysiders, regarding how they could pull off a historic comeback.

The Spaniard urged Liverpool not to get overly anxious, whilst maintaining concentration, and keeping focused:

“The way the tie is, if you score once, you are back in it. Even if that takes an hour, so be it.

“For me, the key will be not to get too anxious – for them to manage that anxiety – don’t rush it. Maintain concentration levels and keep focused.

“With quality players, a goal will come.

“But Liverpool have to be in a position where they can keep a clean sheet – and they will have to be more aggressive at Anfield and play with greater intensity over 90 minutes than they did in Madrid.

“Sadly, they cannot rely on the crowd to provide the spark for that.

“In my experience, the supporters at Anfield have been a huge factor in those European nights. I don’t think you can dispute that. It has been one reason for their success. One hundred per cent.

“Now, that drive will have to come from within.”
