Southampton 2 – Tottenham 1
Southampton’s 2-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday was important at both ends of the table.
Will the Saints beat the drop?
Second half goals from Yann Valery and James Ward Prowse lifted Southampton up to 16th in the table.
Southampton are on 30 points from 30 games.
As for Tottenham, they’ve only added one point from their last four league matches.
Spurs remain third, however Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea are breathing down their neck.
Referee Kevin Friend has a shocker
A huge talking point after Southampton’s win over Spurs was the performance of referee Kevin Friend.
Saints fans were particularly upset with Friend.
Indeed, they taunted the official with the following song.
"Kevin Friend, he's one of your own" from the Saints fans, who are no happy about the amount of decisions going Spurs' way in this half

Southampton vs Tottenham mistakes, part 1
Southampton fans believe Spurs could have finished the game with only eight men on the pitch.
Should Moussa Sissoko have been sent off for a headbutt on Nathan Redmond?
Sissoko was booked in the 88th minute after he rocked his head in Redmond’s direction.
As the Frenchman was booked, there’s no chance of any retrospective action.
But did Friend bottle it by failing to show a red card?
Would the @FA like to explain this? Redmond booked after Sissoko pushes him in the chest and then headbutts him with Kevin Friend looking straight at it. So corrupt. #SaintsFC pic.twitter.com/Un1xxyMgrV

Southampton vs Tottenham mistakes, part 2
Jan Vertonghen has also attracted plenty of angry from Saints fans.
The Belgian centre-half managed to kick Southampton sub Josh Sims around the side of his head.
Amazingly, Vertonghen wasn’t even booked by ref Friend.

How did Kevin Friend not see this @FA when you can see it the photo he’s looking straight at it, and how did he not send off @MoussaSissoko for a head butt?? The sooner VAR comes into play the better. The ‘professional’ referees association my arse!! #SaintsFC pic.twitter.com/305ZPtaxEl

Southampton vs Tottenham mistakes, part 3
Another Tottenham player who was lucky to stay on the pitch was Kyle Walker-Peters.
Walker-Peters gave away a free-kick which lead to Ward Prowse’s winner.
Should KWP have been red-carded, however?
The Spurs full-back took out Stuart Armstrong when he was through on goal.
Ref Friend only booked Walker-Peters instead of showing a red card.
Southampton vs Tottenham: and finally…
Finally, should Harry Kane’s opener for Spurs have counted?
Some have taken to social media to argue that Kane was offside before he scored against Southampton.
However, it’s worth noting that VAR appeared to be on Kane’s side.
