Everton’s injury problems grow before Merseyside derby vs Liverpool

Everton vs Liverpool

Liverpool only need two more wins to be crowned Premier League champions.

In search of their first league title in 30-years, Liverpool still need to travel to Everton in the Merseyside derby.

It’s still unclear when this match will be staged, as the Premier League need to announce the fixture list for the remainder of the 2019-20 season. However, the Everton vs Liverpool match is likely to be played on June 20.

Yerry Mina joins Jean-Philippe Gbamin on the Everton treatment table

A few days ago, we reported on a fresh injury to Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

Gbamin has suffered an injury-blighted season at Goodison Park, however he had been on course to play again when the season restarted.

Those hopes have sadly been dashed, as Gbamin suffered an Achilles injury at training. He now faces another long spell on the sidelines, possibly up to nine months.

Colombian international defender Yerry Mina has now joined Gbamin on the Everton treatment table.

As confirmed by Times reporter Paul Joyce, “Yerry Mina is facing several weeks on the sidelines after suffering a partial tear of his left quad muscle on Friday.”

Mina looks certain to be unavailable for the Liverpool derby.

Will the Merseyside derby be staged at Goodison Park?

Possibly.

Following the last meeting of the 20 Premier League clubs to confirm the restart of the league on June 17, several matches, including Everton vs Liverpool, were highlighted as requiring a ‘neutral ground’.

However, both Everton and Liverpool have actively tried to convince the authorities that the match can pass off safely at Goodison Park.

On the timeline for a final decision on the venue issue, the Times report:

Everton remain hopeful of staging the derby at Goodison Park rather than at a neutral venue.

Club officials have asked for Liverpool city council’s safety advisory group (SAG) to convene, with a meeting likely to be scheduled at the start of next week.
