Everton keep on spending

Here’s the question which Everton fans will be concerned about.

After what’s sure to be their most expensive transfer window in the club’s history, will Everton be able to break into the Premier League’s top six next season, and possibly even the top four?

Last year Everton again established themselves as the ‘best of the rest’ in the Premier League, as they ended the season in seventh. The Toffees were 15 points clear over eighth-placed Southampton, but they trailed sixth-placed Man United by eight points.

Ronald Koeman has already spent big this summer in an effort to close the gap on the EPL big boys.

£95.85m has already be spent by Everton recruiting Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Henry Onyekuru, Sandro Ramirez and Michael Keane, but the club aren’t done there.

According to widespread reports on Wednesday, Everton are poised to blast through the £100m barrier signing Wayne Rooney from Man United and Olivier Giroud from Arsenal.

What’s the story?

Rooney’s departure from Man United and his return to Everton is reportedly a done deal according to today’s Sun. The red-top report:

Wayne Rooney will make a stunning return to Everton by the end of this week.

Rooney, 31, has been withdrawn from the Manchester United squad that will head to the USA on Sunday for their pre-season tour.

It is believed United will allow Roo to go on a free provided he does not ask that the final two years of his contract are paid up.

His £250,000-a-week tab will be picked up by Everton on a two-year deal, with an option of a further year.

But that’s not all.

Everton are on the verge of signing Olivier Giroud from Arsenal, if reports on Wednesday are to be believed.

The Times, for example, tell their readers that “Olivier Giroud nears exits as Arsenal sign £44m Alexandre Lacazette”.

West Ham, Lyon and Marseille are all in the market for the french international striker, but it looks like Everton are in pole position.

That was made clear by Everton scout Carlo Jacomuzzi yesterday, as he told Italian radio: “We’re signing Giroud for £20m. It’s a bargain compared to the £22m Napoli asked us for Duvan Zapata.”

Will Rooney and Giroud gel together at Goodison Park?

At the same time, Everton are poised to sell Romelu Lukaku for huge money this summer. The Belgian is a target for Man United and Chelsea.
