As per a report from the Telegraph this evening, Premier League outfit Everton are the latest side to express an interest in free agent winger Gelson Martins.
Martins, a 23-year-old Portuguese international, came up through the youth ranks at Sporting CP, before breaking into the club’s first-team setup in 2015.
After struggling for game-time during his debut campaign with the Leões, Martins established himself as a key contributor for the club during the 2016-17 season, racking up 6 goals and 9 assists in 32 league outings.
And, after playing a starring role once again this past season (13 goals and 13 assists across all competitions), the blistering wide-man has since been heavily linked with a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
All of Real Madrid, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United and Juventus have been named as admirers of Martins’ talents, with previous reports having even claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo was pushing the board at the Bernabeu to splash out on his fellow countryman.
And, after Martins became the latest Sporting star to file to have his contract with the Portuguese giants terminated following the fan attack on the club’s players and staff last month, interest in his signature has only increased.
As such, as per the aforementioned report from the Telegraph this evening, Everton are the latest side to join the race for the pacy winger, with Toffees’ boss Marco Silva said to be a huge admirer of Martins’ talents.
However, with so many of Europe’s top clubs to compete with for the signature of the Portuguese star, who is currently on international duty with the European champions, convincing Martins to make the move to Goodison Park will no doubt prove a tough sell.
