Wayne Rooney & Everton

Everton fans react to Wayne Rooney scoring again in pre-season

Following Wayne Rooney’s return to Goodison Park from Manchester United earlier this month, Everton fans could have been forgiven for feeling a tad underwhelmed at the prospect of their once prodigal son lining out for the club next season.

After all, the English international striker had been labelled as ‘past it’ and ‘over the hill’ by United fans for a number of years now.

Positive signs

However, with another impressive display and goal under his belt during a friendly matchup with Belgian outfit Genk this afternoon, an increasing number of Toffees fans are beginning to believe that there may be some life left in Rooney’s legs yet, and that the 31-year-old could prove an inspired signing in the long-run.

Quality finish

Rooney’s goal today, his second since having returned to Merseyside, was a perfectly controlled sliding strike into the far corner following some excellent buildup play from Sandro Ramirez:

This strike follows the stunning 30-yard curler netted by the Manchester United all-time top goalscorer last week:

Social media reaction

Everton’s fans have since taken to Twitter this afternoon to lavish praise on Rooney, with many even calling for the 119-time capped international to be handed the captain’s armband by manager Ronald Koeman for the upcoming season:
