Europa Conference League draw: West Ham United discover group stage opponents

The draw for the 2022/23 Europa Conference League group stage took place on Friday afternoon.

West Ham United are the only English club competing in the Europa Conference League this season.

The Hammers had been pushing for a place in the Europa League but ended up finishing 7th last term.

David Moyes’ side defeated Danish club Viborg FF in the qualifying round to make it into the group stage.

Last season, the east Londoners produced a thrilling European tour as they made it all the way to the semis of the Europa League.

In the end, they were eliminated by the eventual winners of the competition Eintracht Frankfurt.

Now, they will certainly be aiming to go even further in this competition by claiming the title in Prague on 7 June 2023.

This afternoon, West Ham learned who they will face in the group stage and they were drawn into Group B.

Group B:

West Ham United (England)

FCSB (Romania)

From Pot 2, they drew FCSB who finished runners-up in the Romanian top-flight last season.

Nicolae Dică's side are off to a slow start in the league this season though, as they are 13th after five matches.

Last season, they failed to make it past the qualifying rounds for this competition, losing to FC Shakhter Karagandy on penalties.

RSC Anderlecht (Belgium)

RSC Anderlecht were club which came out of Pot 3 and arguably one of the two toughest sides from that pot.

The Belgian club finished 3rd in the Pro League last season and are currently sat 4th this term.

Anderlecht have a rich history in Europe but last year was disappointing for them as they were eliminated at the Play-off round of this competition.

Silkeborg IF (Denmark)

Silkeborg IF are the fifth lowest ranked club in the Europa Conference League this season.

This is the first time they have qualified for the group stages of a UEFA competition since the 1997 UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Last season saw them finish 3rd in the Danish Superliga and they currently lead the way after six matches this term.
