England trio doubts for Switzerland game, confirms Southgate

England vs Switzerland

England will face Switzerland on Sunday in the Nations League third-place play-off.

The Three Lions lost their semi-final clash with the Netherlands 3-1.

England were not particularly impressive on the night, but they were let down massively by two huge defensive blunders from Ross Barkley and John Stones.

As for Switzerland, they lost their semi 3-1 to Portugal after Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a hat-trick.

England will be hoping to improve on their 3rd place play-off result from the 2018 World Cup, when they lost to Belgium.

England’s doubts

Heading into the game, Gareth Southgate and Joe Gomez spoke to the media on the 8th of June.

When speaking to the media, Gomez stated:

“It’s never to be taken for granted playing for your country. It’s still fairly early in my England career and every time you step on to the pitch in front of the fans the motivation is there.”

Gomez was one of several players who joined up late with the England squad after being in Madrid for the Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham.

After said game, Southgate chose not to start any Spurs or Liverpool players versus the Netherlands. This isn’t too surprising given the fact that the semi-final was less than a week after the UCL final.

Jordan Henderson, Dele Alli and Harry Kane would all come off the bench for England on Thursday.

However, it appears to have been too soon for Henderson, as Southgate has confirmed that he is a doubt to face Switzerland, along with Marcus Rashford and Ben Chilwell.
