Ahead of facing off with Germany, we have provided an insight into England’s top-10 penalty takers from their current squad.
England vs Germany
England are set to face off with old foe Germany in Euro 2020’s round of 16 next Tuesday.
Should the Three Lions see off Joachim Low’s side, they will be handed a fairly favourable run to the final.
All of France, Portugal, Italy, Belgium and Spain are on the other side of the draw this summer.
However, England, of course, still have the mammoth task of getting past Germany, before even thinking about the next round.
Die Mannschaft have not been at their best in recent years, but they were still able to put four past Portugal last week, and are likely to represent England’s toughest test by some distance at Euro 2020 thus far.
Who are England’s best penalty takers?
England also boast a pretty dire record against top nations in the knockout rounds of tournaments.
At the Euros and World Cup, for example, the last big side whom the Three Lions downed in the knockout rounds was Spain all the way back in 1996 – and even that was not a great La Roja outfit.
Another issue England face is that they are historically terrible when it comes to penalty shootouts, a key part of knockout football.
Yes, they did finally win a shootout at the World Cup in 2018. But that has not wiped out years of previous shortcomings.
England have lost twice to Germany in shootouts in the past. Once at the 1990 World Cup (vs West Germany), and then at Euro 96 in the semi-finals.
In turn, as mentioned above, 101 have taken a look at who England’s best penalty takers are at present.
And, in all honesty, there are not too many options to choose from. Only Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford take spot-kicks with any sort of regularity. See the full list below:
