Eintracht Frankfurt vs Chelsea: Match preview

What a season it has been for Eintracht Frankfurt!

They ended last season by beating Bayern Munich 3-1 in the DFB-Pokal Final; their first German Cup since 1988.

However, this season couldn’t have started any worse.

They were hammered 5-0 by Bayern in the DFL-Supercup before losing to fourth division SSV Ulm in the defence of their Cup.

Three defeats from their first five Bundesliga games meant that new Head Coach Adi Hütter was immediately under pressure.

However, since then, his side have climbed up the table and Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Hertha BSC means they are currently 4th with 3 games remaining.

There is another way they could get in the Champions League for the first time since 1960.

The UEFA Europa League.

It is this competition in which they have thrived this season.

They won all 6 group matches in a group containing last season’s finalists Olympique Marseille, Lazio and Apollon Limassol.

Then, in the knockout stages, they’ve had to see off three Champions League drop-outs.

It was Shakhtar Donetsk in the round of 32, Internazionale in the last 16 and, most dramatically of all, Benfica in the quarter-finals.

Despite a 4-2 defeat in the Estádio da Luz in the first leg, they were able to comeback with a 2-0 win in Germany to see them go through on away goals.

That took their tally up to 28 goals in the UEFA Europa League this season, a new record for a German club.

They’ve proven they can compete with the best so can this side stun Chelsea?

Are the Blues Baku bound?

As for Chelsea, the UEFA Europa League has been too easy for them so far.

They strolled through the group stages, amassing 16 points in a group that contained PAOK, Vidi and BATE Borisov.

So far, they’ve come through the knockout stage equally comfortably.

Malmö were thrashed 5-1, Dynamo Kiev dismissed 8-0 and Slavia Prague outclassed 5-3.

In fact, Chelsea are the first English team ever to win 11 European matches in the same season.

However, Frankfurt are a vastly superior side to the six Chelsea have faced thus far.

Make no mistake about it, this is a very tough assignment.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Europa League looked like Chelsea’s best route into the Champions League.

However, following their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday, they’re in pole position to finish in the top 4.

Sarri’s side are currently fourth, 2 points above Arsenal and 3 above Manchester United with just two to play.

However, their Italian manager has never won a trophy and, especially after losing the Carabao Cup Final, he’d love to lift this one.

Will they leave Germany with a lead to hold onto?

Luka Jovic

This is a strong Frankfurt side however, they will not be at full strength.

Kevin Trapp, on loan from PSG, is the number 1 goalkeeper; he’s kept 12 clean sheets in 40 appearances this season.

It’ll be a back 3 for the 28th match in a row.

The defence will feature the experienced Makoto Hasebe; he’s won 114 caps for the Japan national team.

Martin Hinteregger has been an integral figure since joining from Augsburg in January so is likely to get the nod over Evan N’Dicka.

Adi Hütter also has decisions to make in midfield.

Sebastien Rode, who scored the winner in the last round, will definitely start.

He’s likely to be partnered by Gelson Fernandes instead of former Swansea midfielder Jonathan de Guzmán.

Attacking midfielder Mijat Gaćinović missed the weekend match against Hertha with a muscle injury but is expected to be fit for this one.

Wing-back Filip Kostić will be a threat; he has 9 goals and 12 assists to his name this season.

Up front, they’re without some key personnel.

Sébastien Haller has missed the last 6 games due to an abdominal strain.

Also, World Cup star Ante Rebić, who has scored 1o goals this season, is suspended after amassing 3 yellow cards.

However, they do have top scorer Luka Jović.

He’s scored 25 goals this season including 8 in the Europa League.

Jovic is expected to be partnered by Gonçalo Paciência.

All 5 of Paciência’s goals for Frankfurt have been headers, something for Chelsea to be wary of.

This attacking side have scored 87 goals this season but let in 54.

That suggests there will be goals in this one.

Chelsea team news vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Chelsea Callum Hudson-Odoi

As for Chelsea, it’ll be interesting to see Maurizio Sarri’s team selection for this one.

As they’ve only come up against lower quality opponents so far, he’s been able to make lots of changes in the Europa League.

However, Sarri cannot and surely will not continue with that policy.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has started 10 Europa League games so far, keeping 7 clean sheets and conceding just 5 goals.

In defence, Antonio Rüdiger has undergone knee surgery this week so will miss the rest of the season.

Thus, it’ll be David Luiz who partners Europa League ever present Andreas Christensen.

In midfield, if Sarri goes with his strongest XI, it’ll be Jorginho, N’Golo Kanté and one other.

He went with the more defence minded Mateo Kovačić at the weekend.

However, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who’d started the last 4 league games, is expected to come in.

Up front, Eden Hazard has played just 213 of a possible 1,080 minutes in the Europa League (19.7%).

The Belgian has scored 19 goals this season and has registered 13 assists in the Premier League.

That’s more assists than in the previous three seasons combined.

Surely Sarri will start his key man in such a big game.

On the other side, there’s no Callum Hudson-Odoi.

He’ll be out for quite a while after rupturing his Achilles tendon against Burnley.

Pedro was on the bench at the weekend and his freshness should see him start ahead of Willian.

Up front, the Europa League’s top scorer Olivier Giroud is expected to keep his place in the side in this competition ahead of Gonzalo Higuaín.

Giroud has scored against all 6 different opponents Chelsea have faced this season in the Europa League but can he keep up that record here?

This will be a very tough game but can Chelsea get a result?
