EFL Championship 2019/20: Week 3 preview & predictions

Week two of the Championship was once again action-packed and full of excitement.

There were a few surprises over the weekend, as promotion-tipped Leeds were held at home by Nottingham Forest.

Newly-promoted Charlton also put in a solid display, picking up a 3-1 win at home to Stoke.

This coming week’s action kicks off on Friday the 16th of August.

Huddersfield vs Fulham

Friday’s Championship game, which kicks off at 7:45 pm UK time, sees two of the recently-relegated teams go head-to-head.

Huddersfield Town will host Fulham as they go in search of their first win in 2019/20.

The Terriers have previously lost to Derby, and drew 1-1 with QPR this past weekend.

As for Fulham, they picked up their first win of the new campaign on Saturday, beating Blackburn 2-0.

Given the fact that Huddersfield look to be having a tougher time adapting to the Championship again, a Fulham win looks more likely.

Prediction: Huddersfield 0-Fulham 2

Barnsley vs Charlton

Our second game of the week sees two of the recently promoted sides facing off.

Barnsley host Charlton, as they look to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Charlton, on the other hand, managed to pick up a 3-1 at home to Stoke in game-week two.

Barnsley’s last home game would see them beat Fulham 1-0 in a top performance, and if they can repeat something similar vs Charlton, it is likely that they will come away with all three points.

Prediction: Barnsley 2-Charlton 1

Blackburn vs Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough travel to Blackburn in game-week 3, as they look to earn their first league win under Jonathan Woodgate.

Boro lost 1-0 at home to Brentford last weekend, but they did have two goals ruled out, somewhat unluckily.

Like Boro, Blackburn are also still waiting for their first league win of the new campaign.

Tony Mowbray’s side have so far lost to Charlton and Fulham.

While Boro lost to Brentford, their first-half display was filled with promise, and if they can keep that up for the full 90 vs Blackburn, they could finally get their first three points of the season.

Brentford vs Hull

Speaking of Brentford, they are taking on Hull City this weekend.

Brentford were unlucky to lose their first game of the season vs Birmingham, and did well to beat Middlesbrough.

As a result, they could well beat a Hull City side that just managed to beat Reading at home last weekend.

Prediction: Brentford 1-Hull 0

Bristol vs QPR

Bristol City will face QPR on Saturday for the second time in the space of a week.

The two sides will meet at Loftus Road this Tuesday in the League Cup.

The weekend’s game is at Bristol, but given the fact that QPR have managed to beat Stoke and draw with Huddersfield in their opening two outings, it will likely prove a tough test for a winless Bristol City side.

Prediction: Bristol 1-QPR 1

Luton vs West Brom

After drawing with Middlesbrough on the opening day, newly-promoted Luton were handed their first league loss of the season away to Cardiff last Saturday.

They are back at home this game-week for another tough test, in the form of West Brom.

Luton are currently 27 games unbeaten at home, and will likely prove a tough nut to crack for the Baggies.

However, West Brom are yet to lose this season, and could prove too much for Luton.

Prediction: Luton 1-West Brom 2

Millwall vs Sheffield Wednesday

Millwall have had a solid start to the season, beating Preston on the opening day, before drawing away to West Brom over the weekend.

They must now host a Sheffield Wednesday side who are one of just two Championship teams to have won their opening two games.

Millwall’s record at home was pretty poor last year, but they did beat Preston 1-0 there at the start of the season.

Prediction: Millwall 1-Sheffield Wednesday 1

Nottingham Forest vs Birmingham

After a disappointing opening game vs West Brom, Nottingham Forest managed a decent 1-1 draw away to Leeds United last weekend.

As for Birmingham, they have started the season pretty well, beating Brentford and drawing with Bristol.

However, they have yet to score more than once in said games, and their lack of firepower may cost them.

Prediction: Nottingham Forest 2-Birmingham 0

Stoke vs Derby

Stoke’s season has started off horribly.

They lost their first outing 2-1 vs QPR, before going to Charlton and losing 3-1 this past Saturday.

Stoke now face another tough test in Derby County, who have so far beaten Huddersfield and drawn with Swansea this term.

Prediction: Stoke 1-Derby 1

Swansea vs Preston

Swansea head into their 3rd Championship game of 2019/20 unbeaten, having drawn one and won one.

They are at home to Preston this weekend. Preston smashed Wigan 3-0 at home last Saturday, but lost away to Millwall in their previous tie.

This game will likely be close, but Swansea should edge it as they are the home side.

Prediction: Swansea 1-Preston 0

Wigan vs Leeds

Wigan started the season well, beating Cardiff 3-2.

However, as mentioned above, they were hammered 3-0 vs Preston this past weekend.

They will now host Leeds United, a side who could well exploit a Wigan defence that has already leaked five goals in two games.

While Leeds did draw their last game, there was a big claim that they could have had a penalty towards the end of the match.

Patrick Bamford also had a few chances vs Nottingham Forest, and if he is a bit more clinical vs Wigan, the home side could be in trouble.

Prediction: Wigan 0-Leeds 2

Reading vs Cardiff

The final game of week three sees Reading host Cardiff on Sunday the 18th of August.

Reading are one of just three sides yet to pick up a point in the Championship this season.

As a result, they could be in for a hammering vs promotion-chasing Cardiff.

Prediction: Reading 0-Cardiff 2
