Edouard Mendy discusses his relationship with Kepa & expectations that surround Chelsea goalkeepers

Mendy’s bright start

Chelsea were one of the most active Premier League sides on the transfer front this summer.

Their final addition during the window saw the Blues lure Edouard Mendy away from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes, for a fee of around £22m.

The African played a key role in Rennes’ boasting of one of the best defensive records in the French top-flight last season, and has already shown signs that he could well have a similar impact in southwest London.

So far, the stop-stopper has been afforded just three starts for Chelsea, but, across these appearances, he has helped a usually shaky Blues backline to concede just one goal.

Mendy on Kepa & high expectations

Now, ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming meeting with Manchester United, in which he is expected to be handed a start, the 28-year-old has been speaking to the media.

First, Mendy opened up on his relationship with Kepa.

The Spaniard has endured a woeful last year or so at Stamford Bridge, with it no secret that Mendy was signed to take over the no.1 spot from Kepa.

Despite this, Mendy insists that he maintains a ‘very good relationship’ with the former Athletic Bilbao man:

“I have a very good relationship with Kepa.

“The group of goalkeepers we have, we are all very open, and all of us understand that the team is the most important thing here and doing what is right for the group. Our relationships are already very good.

“We work well together and are pushing each other every day to improve ourselves and to improve each other, and we know as goalkeepers that we have to stay unified and that is how things are going at the moment.”

Mendy also commented on the expectations which come with being a Chelsea goalkeeper, though the Senegalese standout was quick to assure that he will not put any added pressure on himself:

“To be at a club where such great goalkeepers have played is fantastic and very important to me. I am aware of the expectations that surround the goalkeeper position at Chelsea, but I am not going to put any pressure on myself and compare myself to legends here.

“I have only just arrived so my aim is to carry on progressing and when the coach asks me, to make sure I am there for the team and helping with their success.”
