Edinson Cavani matches manager Solskjaer in Man United record books as Reds’ remarkable away form continues

Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani-inspired turnaround victory at Southampton this afternoon saw the club’s historic form on the road continue.

Reds roar back

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men made the trip to St. Mary’s a short time ago, for their latest Premier League outing.

The Red Devils headed into proceedings amid a morale-boosting stretch of form of late, having bagged consecutive wins over all of Everton, West Brom and, most recently, Istanbul Basaksehir.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – NOVEMBER 24: Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United looks on as team mate Marcus Rashford of Manchester United prepares to take a penalty, leading to their team’s third goal during the UEFA Champions League Group H stage match between Manchester United and İstanbul Basaksehir at Old Trafford on November 24, 2020 in Manchester, England. And, when all was said and done this afternoon, the upturn being enjoyed on the red half of Manchester only continued.

A staggering game of football on the southeast eventually saw United come back from two goals down to earn a last-gasp victory, guiding the club up to 7th in the English top-flight in the process.

Jan Bednarek opened the game’s scoring with 23 minutes on the clock, nodding home James Ward-Prowse’s pinpoint corner kick.

And Saints captain Ward-Prowse turned goalscorer a short time later, bending a sumptuous free-kick inside David de Gea’s near post, despite the best efforts of the visitors’ shot-stopper:

The afternoon’s momentum, however, swung in United’s favour on the hour-mark.

After Edinson Cavani laid a perfect pass across the face of the Southampton goal, Bruno Fernandes made no mistake in pulling one back for the away side from close range.

And it was 2-2 fifteen minutes from time, as substitute Cavani stopped low to nod home at the back post.

The remarkable turnaround at St. Mary’s was then completed deep into injury-time, when Man of the Match Cavani showcased his predatory instincts once more, to glance Marcus Rashford’s delivery beyond Alex McCarthy and in.

Cavani’s cutting edge

On the back of proceedings coming to a close in Hampshire, it has therefore since come as little surprise to see the name of one man take centre stage in the post-match chatter.

The player in question? Edinson Cavani.

Uruguayan hitman Cavani had endured a somewhat subdued opening to life in England to this point, on the back of his deadline day Old Trafford switch last month.

Today, though, the former PSG man reminded fans of exactly why he so long stood as one of European football’s most lethal centre-forwards, emerging from the bench to play a direct role in all 3 of his side’s goals.

And, remarkably, this haul has since seen Cavani – on just his 5th Premier League appearance – join none other than manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Red Devils’ record books:

Their comeback win this afternoon also saw Solskjaer’s United set not only a new club benchmark, but a Premier League record, too:
