Edinson Cavani hit Neymar where it hurts with dressing room taunt

Edinson Cavani vs Neymar

Edinson Cavani and Neymar appear to have reached a truce after their high-profile spat last week during Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 win over Lyon. At least, publicly, that is. Things may be very tense behind the scenes.

Strong words were exchanged in the aftermath of Neymar’s attempted hijacking of set-pieces. He didn’t succeed with a penalty but did manage to keep Cavani from taking a free-kick with a little help from Dani Alves.

Alves was subsequently blasted with criticism by everyone on social media. Footballers joined in on the tut-fest with Diego Forlan backing up his compatriot. He used very harsh words to slam the ex-Barcelona pair.

Cue a number of PR moves to attempt to assure everyone that things had been smoothed over. A party here and there, where the entire squad gathered. Neymar apologising to his strike partner for his selfishness.

But if you think that’s the end of that then you might be in for a surprise. Cavani was reportedly offered a €1 million bonus by PSG to allow Neymar to take set-pieces. This has been denied by the club since.

Dressing room taunts

The taunts Cavani used against Neymar were bound to hit him where it hurts. El Pais reported that he confronted the Brazilian in the dressing room after the match and said: “Do you really think that you’re Messi?”

This one again proves that Messi is the only player on earth who other world class players would allow to overshadow them if they were playing together. It’s not simply his talent they respect, it’s Messi the person.

Neymar is a world-class forward but isn’t as talented and isn’t remotely as humble as the Barca legend.
