Chile, who won this competition in 2015 and 2016, are looking to become only the second team in the competition’s 103 year history to win three titles in a row.

However, many thought that this ageing squad was not capable of going all the way once again.

Their critics were silenced on Monday night.

They took on Japan in São Paulo and the first 40 minutes were very even.

However, La Roja opened the scoring through Erick Pulgar’s towering head just before half time.

1-0 Chile at the break.

They then doubled their lead when Eduardo Vargas’ shot deflected into the top corner.

Japan then had three amazing chances to get themselves back in the game but could not take any of them.

On the counter attack, Alexis Sánchez popped up at the back post with his 42nd goal for Chile.

Less than 60 seconds later, it was 4-0; Vargas getting his second, lobbing the keeper after a defensive mishap.

Vargas is now Chile’s top scorer in Copa América’s with 12.

The 4-0 scoreline does not reflect how even that game actually was but an outstanding win for Reinaldo Rueda’s side nonetheless.

They’re likely to get another win here.

That’s because Ecuador were absolutely abysmal on matchday one.

Hernán Darío Gómez’s side were swatted aside 4-0 by Uruguay on Sunday and 4-0 flattered them.

They had just two shots in the game.

It must be noted that they played 65 minutes with ten men after José Quintero was sent off for a stray elbow.

However, even with a full compliment of players, Chile will have far too much quality for them.

The defending champions will book their place in the quarter-finals here.
