Football fans are absolutely spoiled for choice this weekend when it comes to big clashes. In the Premier League, we have Manchester United travelling to Liverpool. Italy has several showstoppers while La Liga also provides.
The big match in Spain’s top division comes between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. The Catalans prepare for a first trip to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano and Diego Simeone has pleaded with them to be gracious guests.
His comments follow complaints by Barcelona about the length of the grass during their recent match at Getafe. They like it when the grass is short because it aids quick-tempo football. Getafe kept their grass long.
When quizzed about what length the grass would be this weekend, Simeone said: “I am not a gardener, I am a coach, and I go to the pitch to prepare the team.” Both teams are unbeaten. Atletico trail Barca by six points.
He then nipped any potential cries of not providing the conditions that suit Barcelona’s game in the bud by saying: “When you invite me to your house, I use your tablecloth, your dishes and your glasses.” Fair point.
Atletico will be coming up against a deadly-as-ever Lionel Messi. The Argentine maestro is coming off the back of a superb shift for his country, hitting a hat-trick to help Argentina beat Ecuador in World Cup Qualifying.
Messi has a fantastic track record against Atletico and Simeone’s men will have a tough task keeping him at bay. Simeone was also proud of his compatriot: “I watched the Argentina match. Messi had that night that all Argentines wanted and asked for, and for some who did not believe in him, he proved that he is the best in the world.”
Messi has started the season by scoring 14 goals in 11 games for Barcelona.
