Diego Costa’s return to Atletico Madrid will have been celebrated by Manchester United. Not because Chelsea were selling one of their best players. The main cause for celebration is that Atletico had signed a world-class forward.
You could ask something silly about why United would care about that but, as we’ve just established, that would be silly. The reason is so in your face that it’s almost gouging out your eyes while kissing you on the lips. Cheeky reason.
Imagine the sound of a harp lulling you into a memory of the summer of 2017. United, desperate for a striker, had been linked with Griezmann for months. Stories leading up to the transfer window insisted that it was a done deal.
Griezmann had a €100 million release clause and United had the money. It was a done deal. Griezmann wanted a move to Old Trafford and his best mate was Paul Pogba. Done deal. His brother loves the Red Devils. Done deal.
Antoine Griezmann has now scored in back-to-back LaLiga home games this season.

Except we all know how the summer went and that deal wasn’t done. Atletico’s transfer ban won’t end until January 2018 and Griezmann decided that it would be best to stick around rather than leaving his side short of options.
He said that it would ‘a dirty move’ to leave in the summer and his nobility must be respected.
With Diego Costa set to start playing for Atletico from January onwards, Griezmann can leave next summer with a clear conscience. ESPN report that Jose Mourinho is still a huge fan of the French star and wants to sign him.
United already have a pretty stacked attack with Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all vying for a place. Zlatan Ibrahimovic will probably be gone by then. Will one of the other forwards join him?
