As per a report from Spanish outlet AS, Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is pushing hard to make a return to the pitch in the club’s upcoming meeting with Liverpool.
Atleti host Liverpool
Diego Simeone’s men are set to welcome the European champions to the Wanda Metropolitano next Tuesday.
The clash will come as the first of two between the clubs, as the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League get underway.
Liverpool will understandably head into the tie as clear favourites to advance, not only due to the Reds’ sensational form to this point in the campaign, but also Atletico’s struggles.
Despite the relative inconsistencies of both Barcelona and Real Madrid thus far this season, the Rojiblancos currently sit a hefty 13 points off the La Liga summit.
They were also ousted from the Copa del Rey by minnows Cultural Leonesa, and are currently in the midst of a streak of just 1 win from the club’s last 6 across all competitions.
Costa to return?
Atleti’s hopes of turning their fortunes around with a surprise win over Liverpool next week, meanwhile, have not been at all aided by their recent fortunes on the personnel front.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that the capital giants were sweating over the fitness of as many as 7 important players, ahead of their meeting with Jurgen Klopp’s outfit.
As per the aforementioned update courtesy of AS this afternoon, though, one of Diego Simeone’s sidelined stars now looks increasingly likely to make at least some form of contribution on Tuesday.
The individual in question is Diego Costa.
Former Chelsea hitman Costa has been sidelined since November, after being forced to undergo hernia surgery.
The 31-year-old, though, is said to have returned to first-team training last week, and is now doing his utmost to ensure that he is at the disposal of Simeone when Atletico get their European campaign back underway in 5 days’ time.
