Everton and Inter Milan miss out as Di Marzio confirms Malcom to Roma is done

Malcom Filipe S. De Oliveira

As per a report from reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Serie A outfit AS Roma have secured a deal for in-demand Bordeaux star Malcom.

Prodigious talent

Malcom, a 21-year-old Brazilian U23 international, was thrown into the limelight in a major way upon the opening of the winter transfer market this past January, after a stellar first half of the season in Ligue 1.

The versatile attacker, who can play on either wing or in a more central role, racked up 12 goals and 7 assists in 35 appearances (32 starts) in the French top-flight this past season, with his seering pace, hammer of a left foot and penchant for the spectacular having led to links with some of European football’s biggest clubs.

North London battle

In England, all of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham were named as having expressed an interest in Malcom, though it was the latter duo who emerged as the clear leading contenders for his signature towards the close of the transfer window in January.

Reports had suggested that Spurs were closing in on a deal with Bordeaux which would have seen Malcom signed immediately, but remain in France for the remainder of the season, though such rumours were eventually proven to be wide of the mark.

As such, Mauricio Pochettino’s men opted to bring in Lucas Moura from PSG instead.

Arsenal, meanwhile, switched their attentions to securing an agreement with Borussia Dortmund for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, though the Gunners have nevertheless continued to be linked with a move for Malcom this summer.

Serie A link

But, as was first revealed by Sky Italia last month, Malcom looked set to snub a move to the Premier League this summer, having instead given his word to Serie A giants Inter Milan over a move to the San Siro.

Gianluca Di Marzio noted that Malcom viewed Inter as the ideal environment to continue his growth as a player, and that the Brazilian ‘said yes’ to a move to the Nerazzurri during a meeting between the parties on the 4th of June, despite proposals from all of Liverpool, PSG and Borussia Dortmund.

However, it since came to light that Inter and Bordeaux were in disagreement over the terms of any possible deal, with the former reportedly determined to secure a loan with option to buy, whereas the French outfit preferred a purchase obligation for next summer.

Goodison bound?

As such, other suitors were allowed back into the race for Malcom, with Tottenham rumoured to have reignited their chase of the youngster, and Fulham having even been named as a surprise potential destination over the last 7 days.

But, as per a shock update from Sky Sports’ reporter Kaveh Solhekol last Tuesday night, it was revealed that a new clear front-runner had emerged for Malcom, in the form of Everton:

‘Would like to come to Italy’

Solhekol’s report was quickly backed by numerous others, which suggested that Malcom’s move to Merseyside was a mere formality.

But, as per another significant update in what is fast becoming one of the sagas of the summer, Fernando Garcia, Malcom’s representative, confirmed during an interview with TeleRadioStereo last Thursday that he was set to hold talks with Serie A giants AS Roma, with the attacker himself keen on the idea of a move to Italy:

‘In the next few hours I’ll have contact with [sporting director] Monchi.’

‘The player would like to come to Italy.’

Done deal

And, following mounting claims that the Giallorossi had leapfrogged Everton as a result of the aforementioned meeting last week, the ever-reliable Gianluca Di Marzio has this evening confirmed that a deal has been struck with Bordeaux, and that Malcom is set to become a Roma player imminently:
