Deschamps urges Giroud to “find another situation” as Chelsea minutes continue to elude striker

Deschamps urges Giroud to “find another situation” as Chelsea minutes continue to elude striker

Giroud’s journey

Giroud appeared to exchange a bit-part situation at Arsenal for another at Chelsea when the French striker moved across London for £18 million. At the time Chelsea had spent big on Alvaro Morata and even decided to bring Gonzalo Higuain on a 6-month loan in 2019.

The promotion of Tammy Abraham in Frank Lampard’s first season saw Giroud’s minutes continue to lessen and in the most recent window, Chelsea went big again on a forward with RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner joining the club.

Despite all these barriers which have impeded the Frenchman’s ability to get game time, French coach Didier Deschamps has continued to select Giroud. He failed to start just one game in the 2018 Russian World Cup and has since reached a 100 French caps and overtook Michel Platini to become the nation’s second highest goal scorer behind Thierry Henry.

At 34 years-of-age, the time is ticking on what has been a late blossom to a top-flight career. Younger talents within the French side appear to be bursting at the seams and if Giroud has any hope of taking the French record, regular game time is likely to be his only hope for national selection.

Deschamps’ urge

This rings true in France manager Didier Deschamps’ assessment of Giroud’s situation. Speaking to French media, Deschamps said, “Olivier Giroud knows it – the situation he’s in today cannot drag on forever. Before March he will have to find another situation than this one.”

“I never give advice, I give an opinion. At the end of the day, it’s the player’s decision. He has had situations that have sometimes been complicated to deal with.

“Today, it is not good for him. Will it stay the same or will it improve? It’s up to him. He knows what I think, even if I don’t forget everything he has done and everything he would still be able to do.”

Kylian Mbappe, Anthony Martial and Antoine Griezmann are just a few of the possible options Deschamps could choose to lead the line and whilst Giroud has been trusted time and time again by the French coach, his time could soon be running out.
