Marcelo Bielsa

Derby vs Leeds betting tips: Championship play-offs preview & predictions

Derby vs Leeds prediction: Derby 1-1 Leeds

A new rivalry was born this season.

Back in January, Derby manager Frank Lampard called out Leeds’ Marcelo Bielsa for spying on his team prior to their game.

Leeds won that match 2-0 at Elland Road to go with their 4-1 victory at Pride Park in August.

As seems fitting, these two go again so will there be a winner in the East Midlands?

Derby County vs Leeds United: Match preview

Derby are back in the play-offs.

Since 2013, they’ve been in the play-offs 4 times now, including last season.

12 months ago, despite winning the first leg 1-0, they went out to Fulham 2-1 on aggregate.

Will it be fourth time lucky for the Rams?

It has been a decent first season in management for Frank Lampard.

His side beat Manchester United in the EFL Cup and Southampton in the FA Cup, both on penalties.

In the league, they’re in form coming into this one.

They’ve been no lower than 7th since 20 October and have only lost 1 of their last 12 games.

That includes last Sunday’s 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion which secured their play-off place at the expense of Middlesbrough.

Derby are desperate to get back in the big time so will this finally be their year?

Marcelo Bielsa marching into the Premier League?

Or will Leeds end their 15 year wait for Premier League football?

Amazingly, since losing in the Championship play-off Final to Watford in 2006, this is their first venture into the play-offs at this level.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side could not quite go up automatically, finishing just 6 points behind Sheffield United.

However, they are the highest ranked side, so are the favourites to go up.

However, they come into this one in bad form.

Last weekend they lost 3-2 to the league’s bottom club Ipswich.

That’s now 4 games without a win.

Are the players feeling the effects of a demanding Bielsa season?

Nevertheless, it’s still a good squad and they’ve already beaten Derby twice this season.

If they make that three here, they’ll be in the box seat for a trip to Wembley.

Frank Lampard does have some potential selection issues ahead of this one but it looks like all of his big stars will be available.

Since the turn of the year, Kelle Roos has established himself as the number 1 goalkeeper ahead of Scott Carson.

It’s likely to be the same back 4 as last weekend.

Ashley Cole is expected to miss out through injury but he was unlikely to play anyway.

In midfield, Duane Holmes is expected to drop out from the XI that lined-up last weekend.

Tom Huddlestone will be the man to come in.

Ahead of them, Tom Lawrence is available after he escaped a retrospective ban for his alleged dive against West Brom.

He’ll make up an exciting attacking trio which also contains Mason Mount and Harry Wilson.

Up front, Martyn Waghorn had an eventful afternoon last Sunday.

He scored and then went off injured all in the first 40 minutes against West Brom in the 3-1 victory.

However, he is expected to be fit as he looks to add to his 13 goals this season.

Their potential threats off the bench include Florian Jozefzoon, Jack Marriott and veteran centre-forward David Nugent.

Will this side take a lead to Elland Road?

It’s fair to say that Leeds certainly do not have the third best squad in the Championship.

So, for Marcelo Bielsa to get them into the position is fantastic.

However, his squad have looked exhausted in recent games but the week they’ve had to prepare for this should’ve done them the world of good.

Goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has quite an impressive trophy collection.

He won La Liga, the Supercopa de España, 3 UEFA Champions Leagues, 2 UEFA Super Cups and 3 FIFA Club World Cups during his time at Real Madrid.

He’s played every game bar one (which he was suspended for) since joining Leeds in January.

In front of him, captain Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson are the established centre-back pairing.

Stuart Dallas is expected to continue at left-back.

A midfielder by trade, Dallas has been used in 5 different positions this season.

He is filling in there because Barry Douglas is out with a medial collateral ligament knee injury.

They’re expected to continue with 4-2-3-1, which they’ve deployed in 57% of matches, as opposed to the more attacking 4-1-4-1.

Mateusz Klich will be a part of that midfield two; he’s scored 10 goals this season including the very controversial one against Aston Villa.

On the right, Pablo Hernández will make his 121 appearance for Leeds.

He’d scored just 15 goals in 82 appearances before this season, under Bielsa he’s got 12 goals in 38 matches.

Adam Forshaw will get the more attacking central role with Jack Harrison on the left.

18 year old Jack Clarke will be on the bench.

Kemar Roofe will be up front as Patrick Bamford is suspended for deceiving the referee in the infamous Aston Villa match.

Will Leeds beat Derby for the third time this season and put themselves in the box seat for Wembley?
