A heated debate over the validity of Sadio Mane’s opening goal for Liverpool during the Reds’ clash with Bournemouth has erupted online this afternoon.
Liverpool vs Bournemouth
Jurgen Klopp’s table-toppers are currently locked in action with Bournemouth at Anfield.
Liverpool headed into proceedings aware that a victory would see them reclaim sole ownership of top spot in the English top-flight, ahead of Manchester City’s meeting with Chelsea tomorrow evening.
Bournemouth, meanwhile, had followed a morale-boosting pair of consecutive victories over West Ham and Chelsea with a hugely-disappointing 2-0 defeat at Cardiff last time out.
Liverpool in front
As such, it came as little surprise when the Cherries fell behind early on at Anfield, with Sadio Mane having bagged the game’s opener.
The goal came about after the Senegalese attacker got on the end of a superb James Milner cross from the right to bury a powerful header past the helpless Artur Boruc.
‘Getting silly now’
Upon replays of Mane’s opener being broadcast, a debate quickly erupted amongst fans, online, though, regarding whether the goal should in fact have been disallowed.
The exchange came about over a potential offside call, with many having been absolutely adamant that Mane had been ahead of Bournemouth’s backline when Milner’s cross was whipped in, making it 2 offside goals awarded to Liverpool in the space of 2 games:
Mane was offside. 2 in 2 games.

Sadio Mane has scored to give Liverpool the lead. For the second game in a row, they get an offside goal. 1-0. It’s getting really silly now. pic.twitter.com/NhKcMXUZeK

Mane was offside there. Two games in a row Liverpool benefits from a linesman’s error

Sadio Mane has scored to give Liverpool the lead against Bournemouth. Offside once again but the linesman doesn’t call it.

#bbcfootball I don’t believe in conspiracies, nor do think Referees are crooked, but my patience is being tested. Mane was offside.

‘Bang on line’
Others, though, were equally-unwavering in their stance that Mane was in fact onside, and that a combination of camera angles and misconstrued interpretation of the rules of the game were behind the calls for Liverpool’s opener to have been ruled out:
Why are rival fans upset about Sadio Mane?
He was clearly onside ffs. Mad agenda.

Love how everyone thinks Mane’s goal was offside. His hand was offside, which means that he was onside as you can’t score with your hand.

Mane was onside shut up

Poor quality but Mane is bang on line for this ‘offside’ goal, hands and arms do not count when determining offside by the rules so dry the eyes and go crawling back in the cave 🙄 pic.twitter.com/s4Q8VEdPwM

Mane was not offside.

Err no. The camera angle there is behind Mane who is played on by the centre back
