De Gea out? Manchester United eyeing up free agent goalkeeper ahead of summer move

There could be a changing of the guard between the posts at Old Trafford

Manchester United are eyeing up a move for potential free agent Yann Sommer this summer as they look to continue revamping their squad under Erik ten Hag.

The Swiss shot-stopper, who is no.1 for both club and country, is out of contract with Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2023, meaning that he is free to agree a pre-contract with another side come January 1st.

And the Red Devils, who were interested in making a move for Sommer last summer, are ready to offer him a chance to move to Old Trafford 12 months later, according to ESPN.

It remains unclear just what capacity the veteran shot-stopper would arrive as, however.

Martin Dubravka, signed on loan from Newcastle United in the dying days of the transfer window, is expected to return to Tyneside at the end of the season, while David de Gea is also out of contract in the summer, and his wages are thought to be a major stumbling block to any new deal, including the optional 12 month extension option that the Red Devils have in the current contract.

Meanwhile, the future of loanee Dean Henderson, currently with Nottingham Forest, remains up in the air after he slammed the Red Devils and Erik ten Hag in an explosive talksport interview.

Ten Hag has been keen to revamp his squad, with his current no.1 often criticised for his inability to use his feet in the way that some other modern goalkeepers are able to.

Also linked with Portugal no.1 Diogo Costa, currently at Porto, Sommer could be one of two goalkeeping additions at Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, the Red Devils are also keen to add another forward option as well as a right-back and central midfielder in the coming transfer windows as they look to rebuild under their new boss.
