Danilo & Laporte out, Sane in: Man City’s squad to face Liverpool – MEN

The Manchester Evening News have this afternoon provided an insight into Manchester City’s travelling squad set to take on Liverpool in the Community Shield.

Man City vs Liverpool

English football’s high-profile curtain raiser ahead of the new Premier League season is set to take place tomorrow afternoon.

The Community Shield is generally contested by the winners of the English top-flight, and the FA Cup champions.

However, as Manchester City emerged victorious in both in 2018/19, the Citizens will take on the Premier League runners-up from last season, in the form of Liverpool.

On the back of their fierce battle for the title last time out, meanwhile, a ward of words has already begun between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, ahead of Sunday’s Wembley showdown.

Speaking earlier this week, Liverpool boss Klopp aimed a less-than-subtle jibe at his City counterpart, in suggesting that the Sky Blues can simply splash out as much money as they please on reinforcements every summer:

‘We are not in this fantasy land where you just get whatever you want.’

‘It looks like there are four clubs in the world who can do it constantly.’

‘Madrid, Barcelona, City and PSG. Whatever they need, they do. You cannot compare that. That is the situation.’

Guardiola, meanwhile, since hit back at Klopp, explaining:

‘Of course it bothers me, because it’s not true that we spend £200m every transfer market.’

‘Two seasons ago if we spent a lot it’s because I took over the team and we had 10 or 11 players over 30 years old so we had to do it.’

‘But we cannot spend £200m every season. For example last season Liverpool spent more than £200m last season, and cannot do it this season, but it’s the same.’

Sane in, Laporte out

As such, there will no doubt be an added bite to proceedings between the two sides on Sunday, as they duke it out for the first silverware of the new season.

And, in anticipation of the clash, a first look at the travelling party of Premier League defending champions City has this evening emerged.

As per the Manchester Evening News, Pep Guardiola has a strong 21-man panel to choose from.

This includes Leroy Sane, despite the rampant speculation surrounding the German’s future.

Not spotted amongst the travelling party, however, were any of Fernandinho, Aymeric Laporte or Danilo.

Fernandinho has not yet begun pre-season training, while Laporte is known to be struggling with an injury.

Danilo’s absence, though, could prove significant.

The Brazilian stopper is known to be at the centre of negotiations between City and Juventus, as part of a deal which could see Joao Cancelo make the move to the Etihad.

The Citizens’ squad for the Community Shield, as things stand, looks set to be as follows:

Goalkeepers: Ederson, Claudio Bravo, Daniel Grimshaw

Defenders: John Stones, Kyle Walker, Nicolas Otamendi, Oleks Zinchenko, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Angelino, Eric Garcia

Midfielders: Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Rodri, Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, Bernardo Silva

Forwards: Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero
