Crystal Palace eyeing Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet – Standard

Simon Mignolet v Leicester

As per a report from the Evening Standard, Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is a target for fellow Premier League outfit Crystal Palace.

Mignolet’s Liverpool stint

31-year-old Belgian international Mignolet has been plying his trade at Anfield since 2013.

However, after holding down a starting spot during his first 4 seasons on Merseyside, the shot-stopper has since fallen down the pecking order of manager Jurgen Klopp over the last couple of campaigns.

The 2017/18 season saw Mignolet manage to split Premier League playing time with the since-departed Loris Karius.

However, when it mattered most, en route to the Champions League final, Mignolet was confined to the Reds’ bench.

Alisson’s arrival

And the recently-completed 2018/19 campaign proved an even more frustrating affair for the former Sunderland man.

All told, Mignolet managed just 2 appearances across all competitions.

This of course came on the back of Liverpool securing the signature of Alisson Becker from AS Roma for a then world-record fee (for a goalkeeper) last summer.

And, with Alisson having since gone on to enjoy a stellar start to life on Merseyside, barring a long-term injury for the Brazilian, Mignolet is not expected to see any sort of consistent playing time with the Reds for the foreseeable future.

Crystal Palace switch?

As such, it came as something of a surprise when the Times reported yesterday afternoon that Liverpool fully expect Mignolet to remain with the club for next season.

‘Jürgen Klopp values his attitude and approach to being back-up goalkeeper to Alisson Becker.’

As per the aforementioned update from the Evening Standard this afternoon, though, one of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals nevertheless hope to coax the Belgian away from Anfield this summer.

The outfit in question are Crystal Palace.

Mignolet is said to be available for a fee of around £8 million, with Palace considering an offer.

Brighton, along with clubs in both France and Germany, are also reportedly keeping an eye on the veteran’s situation.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have identified Southampton’s Alex McCarthy as Mignolet’s replacement.

‘I’d like to play’

When questioned on his future during an interview back in March, Mignolet refused to rule out the possibility of a departure from Merseyside this summer:

‘This season, it was something quite easy to accept, but, obviously, I’d like to play.’

‘That’s why I keep working every day and try to keep on going on this path.’

‘I don’t know if an exit is possible this summer. I still have two years left on my contract.’

‘For now, I’m focused on Liverpool and Belgium games. We’ll see later.’
