Cristiano Ronaldo pips Lionel Messi to Champions League Goal of the Season

UEFA have this evening confirmed the list of the top 10 goals from the 2018/19 Champions League season.

Liverpool kings of Europe

9 months of goal-filled, action-packed European club football came to a head in Madrid last night, when Liverpool and Tottenham went head-to-head in the Champions League final.

Both sides contributed heavily to one of the most memorable campaigns in the recent history of the competition, as the Premier League giants overturned respective 3-goal semi-final second-leg deficits to book their places in the Wanda Metropolitano showpiece.

When all was said and done, though, there could only be one winner, with an underwhelming 90 minutes having eventually seen Liverpool emerge with a 2-0 victory.

Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi bagged the goals for the Reds, who secured their 6th European Cup/Champions League crown.

Ronaldo edges out Messi

The aftermath of last night’s finale has since seen UEFA announce a number of awards relating to this season’s Champions League campaign.

The competition’s Squad of the Season was announced this afternoon, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo having highlighted a star-studded 20-man panel:

And two of the aforementioned stars have subsequently also been named atop UEFA’s Goal of the Season chart.

The list, compiled by ‘technical observers’, was announced a short time ago, with the likes of Sadio Mane, Raheem Sterling, Kylian Mbappe and Philippe Coutinho all present.

The top two spots, though, are reserved for the duo who have long-ruled European football.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the players in question, with the former having edged out his long-time rival for top spot.

Messi’s runner-up strike comes in the form of his stunning free-kick versus Liverpool in the first-leg of the semi-final tie between the clubs last month:

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Goal of the Tournament, meanwhile, saw the Juventus hitman latch onto Leonardo Bonucci’s lofted through ball to smash home on the volley versus former club Manchester United last November:
