Cristiano Ronaldo demands improvement after Lyon loss & why Andrea Pirlo was appointed Juventus manager

Juventus exit the Champions League on aggregate vs Lyon

Juventus won the match but lost the tie on Friday night.

In a major Champions League shock, Lyon knocked the Old Lady out of the competition on away goals.

After Lyon beat Juve 1-0 in France, the Bianconeri could only win 2-1 at home.

A Memphis Depay panenka penalty proved decisive for Lyon, who will now face Man City on Saturday night in the quarterfinals.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo demands improvement after Lyon loss

On Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo posted a lengthy message on Instagram after his 2019-20 season ended.

The loudest message in Ronaldo’s post was the need for Juve to improve next season. He wrote:

A huge club such as Juventus must always think like the best in the world, work like the best in the world, so that we can call ourselves one of the best and biggest clubs in the world.

The fans demand more from us. They expect more from us. And we have to deliver, we must live up to the highest expectations.

Ronaldo also blocked off any suggestions that he’s looking for a way out of Juve anytime soon.

The Portuguese star stated his intention to “come back stronger and more committed than ever”.

Also, Cristiano signed off with the message: “See you soon.”

The 2019/20 season is over for us, much later than usual but yet sooner than we expected. Now it’s time for reflection, time to analyse the ups and downs because critical thinking is the only way to improve. A huge club such as Juventus must always think like the best in the world, work like the best in the world, so that we can call ourselves one of the best and biggest clubs in the world. Winning the Serie A once again in such a difficult year is something that we are very proud of. Personally, scoring 37 goals for Juventus and 11 for the Portuguese National Team is something that makes me face the future with renewed ambition and desire to keep doing better and better each year. But the fans demand more from us. They expect more from us. And we have to deliver, we must live up to the highest expectations. May this short vacation break allow us all to make the best decisions for the future and come back stronger and more committed than ever. . See you soon! 💪🏼👊🏼

Why Andrea Pirlo was appointed Juventus manager

The fallout from the Lyon defeat has been immediate at the Allianz Stadium.

After winning his first-ever major league title, manager Maurizio Sarri was sacked on Saturday after one year at Juve.

Andrea Pirlo, who only a few days ago had been unveiled as the club’s U23 coach, has been immediately upgraded to the new Juventus manager.

Pirlo, a club legend, has never managed a team before.

So, why have the Bianconeri made – what some will no doubt argue – such a dramatic managerial switch? Writing for the Athletic, James Horncastle notes:

Juventus are not amateurs. However, relatively speaking, they are hiring one as manager.

Yet, there’s a clear reason Juventus appointed Pirlo:

The key to understanding Juventus’ thinking is to be found in the recurrent theme of Agnelli’s post-mortem on Friday — the need to come back next season with “enthusiasm”.

Juventus lost it over the last year, elements of the dressing room were unhappy and persisting with Sarri wasn’t going to get it back. Pirlo is regenerating it as we speak and needs viewing in the context of a wider rejuvenation at board level 18 months ago.

Agnelli couldn’t afford to waste time and dither on what to do about Sarri.

Will Pirlo be successful at Juventus?

Juve have won the Scudetto for 9 years straight, and many will expect Pirlo to continue that dominance in 2020-21.

However, Juventus have gone down a similar path in their recent history, and that experiment didn’t go too well.

In January 2010, Ciro Ferrara was sacked as Juve manager after a terrible run of form, which included the club’s Champions League exit.

Like Pirlo, Ferrara, a club legend, had never managed before he took the job.

Ferrara replaced Claudio Ranieri in Turin, however the Italian defender failed to complete a season in the dugout of his beloved club.

Will Pirlo do any better?
