Cristiano Ronaldo accused of ‘coward’s challenge’ late in Manchester derby defeat

Cristiano Ronaldo accused of ‘coward’s challenge’ late in Manchester derby defeat

Man United talisman Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of aiming a ‘coward’s challenge’ at Kevin De Bruyne late in yesterday’s Manchester derby.

Silva rounds out the scoring

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men of course marked their return to Premier League action a little over 24 hours ago.

On the back of a crucial comeback point secured at Atalanta during the week, the Red Devils welcomed fierce rivals Man City to Old Trafford, eyeing a 2nd successive league victory.

When all was said and done on Saturday, however, such efforts fell flat, to say the very, very least.

The latest in a season of underwhelming performances ultimately saw United put to the sword by two goals to nil.

Eric Bailly’s own goal set the ball rolling for Pep Guardiola’s City inside ten minutes, before Bernardo Silva’s back post finish on the stroke of the interval ensured that the visitors emerged with all three points.

‘A cheap one’

In turn, across the 24 hours since the action was brought to a close in Manchester on Sunday, it should come as little surprise to hear that a whole host of Man United’s stars have been singled out for deserved criticism.

The likes of Fred, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire struggled throughout the derby, amid a dire all-round team performance.

And now, as outlined above, the game’s aftermath has seen fresh condemnation aimed in the direction of none other than Red Devils star man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Sunday, Trevor Sinclair, of course formerly of City, was keen to highlight a late challenge on the part of the Portuguese, which saw him catch Kevin De Bruyne, who had already been taken down by Bruno Fernandes.

Sinclair went as far as to label Ronaldo’s attempt a ‘coward’s challenge’, owing to an increasingly prominent temper:

‘That’s a cheap one.’

‘The challenge initially went in from Fernandes, and as he’s down on the floor after being fouled, Ronaldo launches into that.’

‘I know it’s only one foot, but he’s jumped in with his studs showing. I thought it was a little bit naughty.’

‘It’s a little bit of frustration, but it’s not OK. I hope De Bruyne is OK because it’s a really poor challenge.’

‘It’s a coward’s challenge. He’s got away with a couple, the one with [Liverpool’s] Curtis Jones as well. He’s got a temper because he’s a winner. He doesn’t like losing.’
