Contract talks between Tottenham and Japhet Tanganga have ‘stalled’ – Athletic

The latest speculation surrounding the future of Spurs youngster Japhet Tanganga will come as a major source of concern for fans of the north Londoners.

Spurs starlet

Versatile 21-year-old Tanganga has emerged as one of the Premier League’s standout young defenders this season.

The English youth international was first handed the chance to impress on a consistent basis at senior level following the turn of the year, by Jose Mourinho.

A Premier League meeting with champions-in-waiting Liverpool on January 11th saw Tanganga thrown in at the deep end, as part of a 3-man backline.

And to say that the stopper went on to take full advantage of the opportunity afforded to him would be putting it lightly.

In fact, so impressive was his performance versus Jurgen Klopp’s men, that Tanganga was handed a starting berth once again just 3 days later, eventually resulting in the youngster establishing himself as an integral member of Spurs’ defence over the weeks that followed.

Concern for Spurs

As such, though a back problem has confined him to the sidelines since the return of English football last month, Tanganga is nevertheless widely expected to act as a key member of Jose Mourinho’s squad into next season and beyond.

Such a scenario actually coming to fruition, though, is evidently based on the assumption that the gifted stopper is happy to continue his development on the books of the Lilywhites.

But, as outlined above, if the latest word stemming from the English media is to be believed, then Tanganga’s future may in fact not be as clear-cut as previously thought.

As revealed by the reliable Charlie Eccleshare of the Athletic, negotiations over a new Tottenham contract for the 21-year-old have stalled.

At present, Tanganga is thought to earn just £1,000-per-week in north London.

Spurs, for their part, have therefore offered to increase their young defender’s wages to around £15,000-per-week.

Tanganga, however, is said to have expected a ‘bigger increase’, on the back of his standout displays this season.

As a result, talks now appear to be on hold, though, significantly, it is added that ‘both parties’ remain hopeful of a compromise being reached.
