Keita suffers injury blow
Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita was unable to face Chelsea in the Super Cup clash on Wednesday due to an injury in training.
The Guinean hasn’t had the greatest of times since returning from the African Cup of Nations.
His nation was knocked out of the tournament at the last-16 stage, a game that Keita was unable to feature in due to injury.
He soon returned, though, and looked set to play some part in the Super Cup clash with Chelsea.
However, it was reported on Tuesday that Keita had limped out of training in Istanbul.
Now, there’s been confirmation over Keita’s injury, with Liverpool revealing that the midfielder was unable to feature against Chelsea due to a muscle strain.
Will Keita miss the clash with Southampton?
In a statement on their official website, Liverpool confirmed a hip injury was suffered in a training session on Tuesday evening, and that Keita had to leave early.
After that injury, Keita ‘will be assessed further’ by the clubs’ medical team, ahead of their clash with Southampton this weekend.
Their statement read:
‘Naby Keita will miss tonight’s UEFA Super Cup clash with Chelsea due to a muscle strain.
‘The Liverpool midfielder left Tuesday evening’s training session at Besiktas Park early after feeling the issue and is not part of the squad for the game in Istanbul.
‘The muscle strain occurred around the hip area and Keita will be assessed further by the Reds’ medical team in the coming days.’
