An explanation for the absence of Callum Wilson from Newcastle United’s latest pre-season squad has, on Friday evening, been forthcoming.

Magpies back in action

Steve Bruce’s men are of course currently in the process of stepping up preparations for the new season.

Amid another disappointing summer transfer window, which has not seen a single fresh face added to the Magpies’ ranks, Newcastle have thus far managed just a solitary win from three friendly outings.

The first saw the Geordie outfit fall to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of York City, before a 3-2 victory at Doncaster last weekend.

Then, most recently, Bruce and co. were held to a 1-1 draw by Rotherham this past Tuesday.

Wilson blow

In turn, Newcastle will no doubt be keen to get things firmly back on track this evening, when they face off with further lower league opposition, in the form of Burton Albion.

Ahead of the fast-approaching action getting underway at the Pirelli Stadium, meanwhile, the starting XI set to take to the pitch for the visitors was unveiled a short time ago.

The likes of Ryan Fraser, Jeff Hendrick and highly-regarded shot-stopper Freddie Woodman have all been included from the off by Steve Bruce:

On the other hand, one major absentee from not only the Magpies’ line-up, but matchday squad altogether, comes in the form of star striker Callum Wilson.

Fears, in turn, no doubt quickly spread amongst the club’s fanbase, with Newcastle’s Premier League opener – a showdown with West Ham at St. James’ Park – now just two weeks away.

And, as confirmed by the reliable Lee Ryder of The Chronicle, such concern would be very much justified, with Wilson, on the back of another injury-riddled season, struggling with a ‘slight knock’:
